Half of the British population has been on a night out without drinking in the last six months, CGA Peach data reveals—proof of the trend of healthy living and the rising popularity of soft drinks.

The abstinence figures are highest among 18 to 34 year-olds, which rather belies the media image of young adults being the most prolific binge drinkers. Three in five (61%) of 18 to 34 year-olds say they have been on a night out without drinking in the last six months, compared to just two in five (42%) of those aged 55. For those in between, aged from 34 to 55, the figure is 53%.

The stats highlight the huge importance of soft drinks offers to pubs and bars now. More than half (56%) of all consumers who drink non-alcoholic drinks rate the soft drinks range as important when they are deciding where to eat or drink out. CGA Peach figures show it is younger adults that manufacturers and pub and bar operators need to target most, since nearly two thirds (65%) of 18 to 34 year-olds cite soft drinks ranges as important.

The research indicates that value for money and atmosphere are other important factors for people who go on nights out without drinking, cited by 47% apiece.
