The Breakfast Club is eating-out’s fastest grower

The Breakfast Club is the fastest-growing operator in UK eating and drinking out, the latest AlixPartners Growth Company Index reveals—with Krispy Kreme, BrewDog, Bill’s, Leon and Wahaca among the other big movers.

The Breakfast Club now has eight venues, having moved into both its biggest unit yet in Canary Wharf and its first location outside of London in Brighton in the last year. AlixPartners calculated a compound annual profit growth rate over the last three years of 147%.

The research with MCA also measured growth of more than 100% at Krispy Kreme (146%), BrewDog (138%), Bill’s (120%) and Leon (118%). Completing the top ten are Wahaca (96%), Loungers (76%), Ed’s Easy Diner (71%), Corbin & King (65%) and New World Trading Company (63%).

The success of The Breakfast Club and others including Bill’s, Leon and Loungers show the importance of all-day offers now; and of on-the-go operators like Krispy Kreme and Leon.

Other significant movers in the Growth Company Index include Wasabi, up 29 places to number 18 with 32% growth; and Pho, up 21 places to 29 with growth of 17%.

Overall, the Index showed increased growth for the sector. A 5.5% growth rate would have put a company in 36th place last year—but this year it would only have been enough to make 50th.

AlixPartners’ Paul Hemming said: “This year’s result demonstrates the sector’s ability to deliver stellar profit growth when a high-quality operation is combined with a compelling consumer offer, and rolled out. The Breakfast Club is a great example and has been achieved alongside a commitment to corporate social responsibility that stands out in the market.”

He added: “Sustaining high levels of profit growth is never easy and the risks of losing consistency and standards are very real. However, there are a strong core of businesses that have featured on every profit tracker and these should rightly be lauded as the stars of the industry.”
