The UK now has more than 20,000 coffeeshops with sales growing by 10% over the last year, new figures show.

Allegra said branded groups had grown their outlets and sales by 12% and 15% respectively during 2015, adding 714 new stores between them—nearly two a day. Costa, Starbucks and Caffe Nero share 53% of the total market. 

The non-traditional sector—including pubs, bars, supermarkets and fast food operators—is also in significant growth, with outlets growing by 10.5% last year. Consumers’ visits are becoming more frequent, with 16% of visitors frequenting one at least once a day this year. 

Allegra’s survey found that Costa was the country’s favourite chain, though Harris + Hoole ranked highest on quality.

Allegra now predicts that the coffeeshop market will exceed 30,000 outlets and £15bn in turnover by 2025, with premium and artisan offers particularly well placed for growth. 

Allegra managing director Jeffrey Young said: “The strong market growth of the past 12 months has exceeded our own estimates. This provides further evidence of the growing importance of coffee shops to the British economy and more importantly their impact on the daily lives of everyday consumers.”
